What is an authority letter?

An authority letter (or authorisation letter) lets another person act on your behalf for a specific task: collecting a cheque book, documents or a parcel, visiting a bank, submitting forms, or representing a company at an office.

Banks and offices usually ask the authorised person to bring the letter, their own ID and a copy of yours, and check the specimen signature on the letter.

Authority letter format

An authority letter is addressed to the office concerned, with the date and a subject line. It names you and the person you're authorising, their relation or designation and ID, exactly what they may do, and for how long. It ends with your signature and their specimen signature, which you attest.

Keep the purpose narrow: authorise one task, not "all matters". For wider powers, such as selling property, you need a power of attorney instead.

Rules that apply

Acts of an authorised agent bind you

When you authorise someone to act for you, what they do within that authority is treated as done by you.

Good to know

What should an authority letter include?

Your details, the authorised person's name and ID, the exact task, the validity period, your signature and their attested specimen signature.

Does an authority letter need stamp paper?

Usually not; a signed letter is enough for collecting documents or bank tasks. Some offices may ask for it on stamp paper or notarised.

What ID should the authorised person carry?

Their original photo ID, plus a self-attested copy of your ID. Banks may ask for both.

What is the difference between an authority letter and a power of attorney?

An authority letter covers a specific, simple task; a power of attorney is a formal document giving wider legal powers, often registered.

Can a company give an authority letter?

Yes. Print it on letterhead, signed by a director or authorised officer, sometimes with a board resolution.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The letter is made in your browser and its details never leave your device.
