A credit note is the document a GST-registered supplier issues to reduce the value or tax of a tax invoice already issued: when goods are returned, a discount is given after the sale, the price was charged too high, or the supply was short or deficient.
It lowers your output tax and the buyer's input tax credit for the same amount, so both sides' GST returns match.
A GST credit note shows your name, address and GSTIN; the words "Credit note"; its own serial number of up to 16 characters and date; the customer's name, address and GSTIN; the number and date of the original invoice; the taxable value and tax being reduced; and your signature.
Report it in the GST return for the month you issue it. A credit note for a financial year can be issued only until 30 November of the next year or your annual return, whichever is earlier.
