What is a rent receipt?
A rent receipt is a signed note from your landlord confirming they received rent from you for a month or period. Salaried employees give rent receipts to their employer as proof of rent paid to claim the HRA (house rent allowance) exemption under the old tax regime.
Employers usually ask for rent receipts once a year during investment-proof submission, typically between January and March, and many accept one receipt per month or one per quarter.
Rent receipt format
A rent receipt shows the tenant's name, the landlord's name, the rented property's address, the rent amount in figures and words, the month or period it covers, how it was paid, the date, and the landlord's signature.
Add the landlord's PAN when the yearly rent is more than ₹1 lakh, and a ₹1 revenue stamp signed across by the landlord when rent of more than ₹5,000 is paid in cash. This generator adds both when they apply.
Rules that apply
Landlord PAN above ₹1 lakh a year
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh a year, give your employer your landlord's PAN to claim HRA.
