What is a self-invoice?

A self-invoice is the tax invoice a GST-registered buyer issues to itself when it has to pay GST under reverse charge (RCM) on a purchase from a supplier who isn't registered. Because the supplier can't issue a tax invoice, the buyer does, and pays the tax directly.

Common cases include legal services from an advocate and other services or goods notified for reverse charge. Along with the self-invoice, the buyer issues a payment voucher when paying the supplier.

Self-invoice format

A self-invoice follows the tax invoice format: your name, address and GSTIN as the recipient; a serial number and date; the supplier's name and address; the place of supply; each item's description, HSN or SAC, value, tax rate and amount; and the statement that tax is payable on reverse charge.

Issue it within 30 days of receiving the goods or services. The tax is paid in cash through your GST return, and you can usually claim it back as input tax credit.
