What is a cash receipt?

A cash receipt is written proof that someone paid you in cash. It protects both sides: the payer can show they paid, and you have a record for your accounts.

Shops, landlords, tutors, contractors and service providers give cash receipts whenever money changes hands without a bank or UPI record.

Cash receipt format

A cash receipt shows the receiver's name, a receipt number and date, who paid, the amount in figures and words, what it was for, and the receiver's signature.

For cash above ₹5,000, a ₹1 revenue stamp is fixed and signed across. Receiving ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, or for one transaction, isn't allowed under income-tax law.

Rules that apply

Revenue stamp on cash receipts above ₹5,000

A receipt for a cash payment of more than ₹5,000 needs a ₹1 revenue stamp, signed across. Some states set their own rules.

No cash receipts of ₹2 lakh or more

You can't receive ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, for one transaction, or for one event; the penalty can equal the amount received.

Good to know

Is a revenue stamp needed on a cash receipt?

Yes, for cash above ₹5,000: fix a ₹1 revenue stamp and sign across it. Below that, no stamp is needed.

What is the maximum cash I can accept?

Under ₹2 lakh from one person in a day or for one transaction. Above that, ask for a bank transfer, cheque or UPI.

Is a handwritten cash receipt valid?

Yes, if it has the details and a signature. A printed receipt is simply clearer and easier to keep track of.

What should a cash receipt include?

The receiver's name, receipt number, date, payer's name, amount in figures and words, purpose, and the receiver's signature.

Can a cash receipt be used for tax?

It proves the payment, but some claims, like donations above ₹2,000 or HRA in some cases, need non-cash payment or extra proof.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The receipt is made in your browser and its details never leave your device.
