What is a donation receipt?

A donation receipt is the acknowledgement a trust, NGO, temple or other charitable institution gives a donor for money received. It records who gave, how much, how it was paid and what it was for.

For donors who want a tax deduction, the formal proof is now the certificate of donation (Form 10BE) that approved institutions download after filing their statement of donations (Form 10BD). The receipt is what the donor gets on the day.

80G donation receipt format

A donation receipt shows the organisation's name, address and PAN; its 80G approval number if it has one; a receipt number and date; the donor's name, address and PAN; the amount in figures and words; the mode of payment; the type of donation; and the signature of an authorised person.

Cash donations above ₹2,000 aren't eligible for the donor's deduction, so ask larger donors to pay by UPI, cheque or bank transfer.

Rules that apply

No deduction for cash above ₹2,000

A donor can't claim a deduction for a donation of more than ₹2,000 paid in cash; it must be paid by another mode.

Form 10BD and Form 10BE

Approved institutions file a statement of donations (Form 10BD) after the year and issue each donor a certificate of donation (Form 10BE), the proof for the donor's claim.

Good to know

Is a donation receipt enough to claim 80G?

Keep it, but the formal proof for the deduction is the Form 10BE certificate the institution issues after the financial year.

Can I claim a cash donation?

Only up to ₹2,000. Cash donations above that aren't eligible for a deduction; pay by UPI, cheque or bank transfer instead.

What details must a donation receipt have?

The organisation's name, address and PAN, its 80G approval number, the donor's name and PAN, the amount, the date, the payment mode and a signature.

Do temples and NGOs need to give receipts?

Yes. Every donation should be acknowledged, and approved institutions must also report donations in Form 10BD.

What is a corpus donation?

A donation given with a written direction that it forms part of the organisation's permanent fund, not spent on running costs.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. The receipt is made in your browser and its details never leave your device.
