What does compress PDF do?

It makes a PDF smaller by re-saving each page as a compressed image at a lower resolution. It works best for scanned documents and photo-heavy PDFs, which are often several megabytes, and is ideal for government portals, job applications and email attachments with size limits.

Because pages become images, text in the compressed copy can no longer be selected or searched. Keep your original for records.

Which level should I choose?

Light keeps documents crisp and still saves space. Balanced suits most uploads. Strong gives the smallest file and is fine for scans that just need to be readable.

If a PDF is mostly text, it's usually small already. The tool tells you if compressing won't help.

Good to know

How do I reduce PDF size?

Add the PDF, choose light, balanced or strong compression, sign in with Google and download the smaller file.

How do I compress a PDF to under 1 MB?

Try Balanced first; if it's still too big, use Strong. Scans of a few pages usually fit under 1 MB.

Will the text still be selectable?

No. Compression saves pages as images, so text can't be selected. Keep the original if you need that.

Does compressing reduce quality?

Slightly, more so at stronger levels. Light keeps quality closest to the original.

Does it count as a download?

Yes. Each compressed PDF you save counts as one download: 3 free a month, unlimited with Pro.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Your files are processed in your browser and saved straight to your device. They never reach our servers, and we keep no copy.
