A purchase order (PO) is the document a buyer sends a vendor to order goods or services at agreed prices. Once the vendor accepts it, it works as a contract: the vendor supplies what's listed, and the buyer pays on the stated terms.
The vendor then quotes the PO number on their tax invoice, which makes it easy to match deliveries, invoices and payments.
A purchase order shows your business name, address and GSTIN; a PO number and date; the vendor's name, address and GSTIN; each item's description, HSN or SAC, quantity, unit, rate and GST; the total; the delivery date and address; and the payment terms.
A PO isn't a tax document, so it doesn't count for GST. The vendor's tax invoice does. GST is shown on the PO so both sides agree on the final cost.
GST is charged on the supplier's tax invoice, not on a purchase order. Input tax credit is claimed on the supplier's tax invoice.

Once the vendor accepts it, a purchase order is generally a binding contract for the goods, prices and terms it lists.
The buyer sends a purchase order to place an order; the vendor sends an invoice to ask for payment after supplying.
It helps. Showing GST makes the agreed total clear, though tax is charged on the vendor's invoice, not the PO.
No. Claim input tax credit on the vendor's tax invoice once the goods or services are received.
Use a running series per financial year, like PO/2026-27/021, so each order is easy to trace.
